Summer is here.  It’s still wedding season.  When you put the two together, you might ask the same question ~ “Can you organize your love life?” City Girl is back with advice for the single person who wants to organize his/her love life (yes, it can be done).

Last month, I offered a few tips for couples to organize their love lives. Now, I’m back with some suggestions for how singles can do the same.

1.  Decide whether you are interested in dating or finding a serious relationship right now. There is no need to be in a relationship if you don’t care to be or if other priorities take precedence.  You should feel comfortable with your choices, but that probably won’t keep loved ones from questioning you about why you aren’t dating.  Consider mentally preparing a few responses to the usual questiosn that singles are posed in the hopes of saving yourself aggravation in the future.

For example:

Well-Intentioned Person: Why aren’t you in a relationship right now?

You: It’s not the right time for me.  I’m focusing on my career.

Well-Intentioned Person: But, you’re so attractive/nice/smart.

You: Thanks.  That’s always nice to hear.

Well-Intentioned Person: Don’t you want to be in a relationship?  You’re not getting any younger!

You: That’s not my priority right now, but I’ll let you know if that changes.

2.  If you’re single and you’d like to be in a relationship, then make a concerted effort to meet new people, try new activities, and socialize in a variety of places. Start to think beyond your normal routine. Make plans once a week with your friends to check out a new bar or attend a local event.  Take a class, join a group or gym, or volunteer regularly to see if you meet anyone of interest through an activity that you enjoy.

3. If you’re ready to be more active in your search for a significant other, then by all means, go for it! Ask friends if they know anyone single with whom you might be compatible.  Sign up for an online dating service and e-mail those matches who pique your interest.  Give your business card out to a person who catches your eye and let him or her know that you’d like to talk more.

Once you are back in the dating scene, decide how much time you have for dating and fill up your schedule accordingly.  Go out on dates to get to know people and increase your odds of finding a person with whom you are truly compatible.  As you plan your week out, try not to overbook.  Also be cognizant of your other personal and professional commitments.  You don’t want to show up on a date looking stressed or tired because you have too much on your plate.

You can’t plan whether or not you’ll meet your soul mate at a particular time.  But, you can decide what you’re looking for and put yourself out there.  If you follow your heart and do what makes you happy, the rest will fall into place.

What suggestions do you have for singles?  How have you organized your love life?
